Understanding Vaccination Requirements When Traveling Abroad

Visiting another country can be an exciting experience. You’re one step closer to immersing yourself in another culture and seeing what life is like outside of the U.S. However, there’s typically more to traveling abroad than getting a passport, booking a flight and packing your bags. Most countries have vaccination requirements that differ from country to country. Here’s what you need to know about vaccinations and traveling abroad.

Finding Out Which Vaccines You Need

Which vaccines you need will depend on a few different factors. Some countries require proof of vaccination for diseases like yellow fever and polio, which are essentially eradicated in the United States but can still pop up in other countries.

Many, but not all, countries have eased COVID-19 vaccination requirements. Some require testing even when vaccinated, and some do not allow unvaccinated U.S. citizens to enter the country.

Consider your health, as well. You will need to be up-to-date on your routine vaccinations before traveling to most places. You also may need additional vaccinations if you are pregnant, have an ongoing illness or have a weakened immune system.

Determining When to Get Vaccinated

Most vaccines don’t start working the moment you get inoculated. Plan to complete the full round of any vaccinations 4 to 6 weeks before your trip. While most vaccines require one dose, there are several that require two doses. There are also some that cannot be taken together and some that can. Keep these factors in mind when planning your vaccine schedule.

Recommended Vaccines and Preventative Measures

While some vaccines are required for international travel, others are highly recommended but not absolutely necessary. For example, if you’re traveling to Asia, you may want to consider being vaccinated against rabies, typhoid fever and Japanese encephalitis. If you’re traveling to a tropical country, especially one in Africa, you may want to consider taking medication to help prevent malaria.

Vaccination requirements and recommendations vary from country to country, so be sure to do your research before booking your international vacation.
