Before we look into treatments for syphilis, we must first understand what it is and how it presents itself.
So, what is syphilis?
Syphilis is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD) that is transmitted through person to person contact, usually via direct contact with a syphilitic/genital sore or ‘chancre’. These sores usually present themselves around areas involved in sexual activity, such as the vagina, mouth, anus and penis. The bacterium at the root of the disease is known as ‘Treponema pallidum’.
Stages of Syphilis Symptoms
Syphilis symptoms in the early stages can be hard to notice. Like many diseases, treatment is easier when detected quickly, so it’s important we educate ourselves on the symptoms of syphilis.
- Initial Stage – A genital sore called a ‘chancre’ develops, multiple are common. Chancre’s are painless, firm and usually quite small. They may present themselves in hard to see spots, making syphilis hard to catch in its early stages. Without treatment, the disease progresses to the next stage.
- Secondary Stage – A syphilis rash starts to form on the skin, often covering the soles of your feet and the palms of your hand. Further secondary stage symptoms include fever, fatigue, sore throat and swollen lymph glands.
- Latent Stage – During the latent stage, syphilis can lay dormant for many years without showing symptoms.
- Final Stage – Also known as tertiary syphilis, this stage is the most dangerous. Usually occurring between 10 and 30 years after initial infection, the damage done to the body at this stage is permanent. Possible symptoms during this stage include dementia, organ damage (heart, liver, brain, bones), loss of motor skills and gradual blindness.
Now that we have a good understanding of syphilis and its symptoms, lets delve into the treatment methods.
I am sure the first thing you want to know is whether or not syphilis is curable, to which the answer is yes! However, catching it in the early stages is vital, with damage done in the tertiary stage having permanent effects on the body.
The preferred treatment for syphilis is penicillin. Depending upon the stage, either intramuscular injections or intravenous therapy is prescribed.
Of course, the best form of treatment is prevention, so what can you do to avoid catching syphilis in the first place? Well its simple, practice safe sex!
Do you notice any of the symptoms mentioned above? Or maybe you just want peace of mind? Do yourself a favor and get tested, there is no shame and you won’t be judged!
